Miami vs Jets (Preview)

The Dolphins and Jets are in a 5 game slide that put the Jets totally out of the playoff race and the Dolphins on life support.

I knew that the Jets were going to be good after the last NFL draft where they hit a home run one a few of their picks some of whom I coveted for Miami like Breece Hall who was on pace for offensive rookie of the year until a season ending knee injury. They also drafted one of the best young CB in the game Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner and if he keeps up his stellar play, he will be the best in the league.

Miami seems totally lost, I am not sure they can win this game against the Jets and if they do lose all hell will break out in Miami and heads will roll even potentially one year HC Mike McDaniel.

It seems so far ago that Miami was torching the league and it was a forgone conclusion we were going to the playoffs, and it was just a matter of where we would be seated as Miami was at one point just behind the Chiefs in the playoff standings.

Now we need to beat the Jets and pray for the Patriots loss to Buffalo to make the playoffs. The Jets torched Miami early in the season and even though they are out of the playoff race they would love to also put Miami out of the playoffs too as the saying goes misery loves company.

On to the Matchup:

  • Where: Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL
  • When: Sunday, January 8, 2023
  • Time: 1p.m. EST
  • Weather: 79°F
  • Point Spread: Dolphins (+1)
  • O/U 38
  • TV: CBS

The matchup: on Offense

Miami enters the game 6th place in total offense with 368.4 yards per game, they are 3rd in passing averaging 273.3 YPG. They are 26th in rushing with just 95.3 yards rushing per game.

The Jets enter the game 22nd in total offense with 223.4 yards per game, they are 15th in passing offense, averaging 223.4 YPG. They are 25th in rushing, averaging 103.0 yards rushing per game.

The matchup: on Defense

Miami enters the game 20th in total defense giving up 347.3 YPG. They are 27th against the pass allowing 240.1 passing yards per game. They are 8th against the run giving up 107.1 rushing yards per game. Allowing 4.3 yards per rush.

The Jets enter the game 3rd in total defense giving up 311.6 YPG. They are 2nd against the pass allowing 192.5 passing yards per game. They are 16th against the run giving up 119.1 rushing yards per game. Allowing 4.1 yards per rush.

The Strategy:

It is obvious from the stats that Miami’s strength on offense will be matched up against the Jets strength on defense. Both units are tops in passing and defending the pass and whoever wins that battle will most likely win the game.

Miami still needs to run the ball and test the Jets run defense that is average at best. If Miami finds success in their run game this game will be an easy win as they then can run and pass at will.

My Take:

With both teams riding a 5-game losing streak something will have to give and one of these two teams will end the season with a win and get that losing monkey off their backs. The home team should prevail but the last time these two met the Jet blew Miami out late in the game and I am sure they are confident they can beat Miami and play the spoiler role.

Prediction

Miami 24, Jets 17
