Miami @ Tampa Bay Pre Season Review

Remember, this is just preseason and many of our starters did not play. But it was still worth watching and I will talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly of this game and things that need to be improved.

The Good,

First and foremost, I must express my delight that football has returned!

Miami won the game 26-24 and the Dolphins might have found their future backup QB in Skylar Thompson, who played a very solid game in which, due to Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgwater being out for various reasons, Thompson played the entire game.

Thompsom ended up 20 of 28 for 218 yards, one TD and ZERO int’s with a 106 passer rating, and that to me is exceptional for a rookie QB drafted in the 7th round to go an entire game without throwing an int. He also had 25 yards rushing at 8.3 YPC!

WR Lynn Bowden Jr. had a very good showing with 3 receptions for 55 yards and a TD with 18.3 yards per catch. He got behind the Tampa defense. Cedrick Wilson, Jr. also showed up well, as did veteran Mohamed Sanu Sr. In fact, the WR group over all had a good day.

There was a Mike Gesicki showing and he is working on his blocking…..and caught a good pass to boot!

The offensive line had some problems in Pass Pro as Skylar Thompson was sacked 3 times with inadequate time to observe the field and make a play. Give Tua that much time in games and we are onto something.

Jason Sanders had an excellent showing, going 4 for 4 from 50 plus yards!

DT Benito Jones had a good showing last night as well, and OT Solomon Kindley had a decent outing as well. Maybe there is hope for him after all.

The Bad

Noah Igbinoghene need I say more?

The defense had a rough time tackling and did not do very well in stopping the run. Like was said earlier these were mostly 2nd and 3rd string players playing so I am not as concerned.

The lack of a rushing attack was truly concerning as the Dolphins will be trying to improve on their abysmal rushing record over the last few years. For the life of me, I don’t understand how our RB’s coach, who has survived 3 regimes, is still here. I just feel a new face needs to be in at that position.

The Ugly

The lower leg injury to CB Trill Williams, who was having very good in camp this year, as of this writing no news to report of the severity of his injury. (Update He is out for the year Torn ACL)

It was the first game under new head coach Mike McDaniel and with most of our starters out on both sides of the ball not much can be made of this game but I am concerned about the poor rushing attack and with two more games to get ready there seems to be a long way to go to get this running game on track.

We are one step closer to the start of the season!!!!

  1. It was basically what you would expect from a week 1 preseason game. But at least coach got a scoring drive on the first possession and a win for his first game.
