Why This Is The Year To Trade Down

Last year I was extremely opposed to the Dolphins trading up or down in the 2020 NFL draft as I knew Miami needed to stand pat and take the BPA that they coveted. Even though I was not on board drafting a QB last year they did take Tua with their first pick in the draft 5th overall. Now that we have our QB of the future this past season showed that we need help on offense to become a playoff team as we were one step away from making the playoffs.

Miami currently have 9 draft picks in the upcoming NFL draft (Picks #’s 3, 18, 36, 50, 81, 113, 181, 194, 221) and normally I would say stand pat but this year it is so different because of the opportunity Miami had to coach the Resees’s Senior Bowl and I cannot tell you what a great opportunity that was for the Dolphins and their draft plans.

So, Miami needs to do as much as they can to acquire even more picks this year especially in the later rounds (3-7) where they can add as many players as possible, they can to bring to Miami to compete. The Dolphins can fill up their roster and have great depth and bring in quite a few players they have identified as players they think can help this team improve.

Here are some names that might end up on Miami’s roster this upcoming 2021 season:

Kellen Mond, QB, Texas A&M Alabama QB Mac JonesNotre Dame QB Ian BookUCLA WR-RB Demetric FeltonNorth Carolina RB Michael CarterLouisville WR Dez FitzpatrickWestern Michigan WR D’Wayne EskridgeMichigan WR Nico CollinsWisconsin-Whitewater OG Quinn MeinerzNorth Dakota State OT Dillon RadunzGrambling State OG David MooreTulane DL Cameron SampleUCLA DT Osa OdighizuwaOhio State EDGE Jonathon CooperOhio State EDGE Jonathon CooperHouston LB Grant StuardWashington CB Keith TaylorUCF S Richie GrantCarlos “Boogie” Basham, DE, Wake Forest,  Richie Grant, S, UCFRobert Hainsey, OL, Notre DameCade Johnson, WR, South Dakota StateQuinn Meinerz, interior O-lineman, Wisconsin-WhitewaterQuincy Roche, edge rusher, MiamiD’Ante Smith, OT, East Carolina

Look for Miami to take a few of these players later in the draft and to have more picks only increases their chances of hitting on players in the later rounds, all thanks to having the chance to coach in this year’s Senior Bowl.

Why Miami will have many trade partners this year.

Well even after going 10-6 Miami have the #3 pick in the draft and the Dolphins are not looking for a QB this year but other teams are, and they will be willing to move up in the draft and trade picks (now and future picks) to get the player they want. There is also a highly rated OT that Miami would be wise to trade down if some needy team wants to move into the #3 spot.

Below is a look at the draft order as it currently stands, I have bolden the teams I feel could want to move into the #3 spot.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-15)
  2. New York Jets (2-14)
  3. Miami Dolphins (via 4-12 Houston Texans)
  4. Atlanta Falcons (4-12)
  5. Cincinnati Bengals (4-11-1)
  6. Philadelphia Eagles (4-11-1)
  7. Detroit Lions (5-11)
  8. Carolina Panthers (5-11)
  9. Denver Broncos (5-11)
  10. Dallas Cowboys (6-10)
  11. New York Giants (6-10)
  12. San Francisco 49ers (6-10)
  13. Los Angeles Chargers (7-9)
  14. Minnesota Vikings (7-9)
  15. New England Patriots (7-9)
  16. Arizona Cardinals (8-8)
  17. Las Vegas Raiders (8-8)
  18. Miami Dolphins (10-6)
  19. Washington Football Team (7-9)
  20. Chicago Bears (8-8)
  21. Indianapolis Colts (11-5)
  22. Tennessee Titans (11-5)
  23. New York Jets (via 12-4 Seattle Seahawks)
  24. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4)
  25. Jacksonville Jaguars (via 10-6 LA Rams)
  26. Cleveland Browns (11-5)
  27. Baltimore Ravens (11-5)
  28. New Orleans Saints (12-4)
  29. Green Bay Packers (13-3)
  30. Buffalo Bills (13-3)
  31.

If Miami does not get into a trade with Houston, they can enhance their draft capital by trading down and currently they do not have a need for any one of the top picks that cannot be fulfilled later in the draft. That is why it would be the best move this year to trade down and get more picks.

This year should be about roster building and bringing in more competition to push for starting positions. Miami is trending upward, and they are not that far from overtaking Buffalo within our division and finally they can truly believe that they are a player or two away from being a top team in the NFL. That is why it is essential that they try to acquire as many picks as possible.
