Could 2021 Be Miami’s Best Draft Ever?

Midseason NFL Mock Draft – Overtime Heroics

2021 should be a can’t miss NFL Draft for The Miami Dolphins due to the advantage they have in more than one way, so let’s look at the advantages the Dolphins have that makes it almost impossible for the Dolphins not to have great success in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Dolphins Have the Draft Capital:

The Dolphins have one of the best Draft Capital of any teams in the NFL because of the wise moves made by GM Chris Grier two seasons ago when he decided to tear down the Dolphins and rebuild trading away some quality YOUNG players for draft picks. The trade that at the time was questioned by many that has proven over time to be a great move for the Dolphins a deal too Good to Pass up.

Miami Traded their Young Pro Bowl OT Laremy Tunsil to Houston and received two first rounders (2020 and 2021) and a 2021 second-round pick in the trade deal that included a few player swaps Houston acquired left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Kenny Stills, a 2020 fourth-round pick and a 2021 sixth-round pick from the Dolphins. So even after going 10-6 in the 2020 season Miami have the 3rd overall pick in the draft as well as the 36th pick of the 2nd round all thanks to Houston.

The Dolphins have 9 picks in the upcoming NFL draft (Picks #’s 3, 18, 36, 50, 81, 113, 181, 194, 221) with so many options to trade up or down in the draft as they see fit, hopefully they will get the players they want and still add some draft capital for this year and/or the future. So, as you can see Miami have the draft Capital.

Miami Is the Place to Be

The Dolphins have always been one of the most attractive places to play in the NFL, the state of Florida is not called the Sunshine State for no reason, it has one of the warmest climates on earth.

In much of Florida, the climate is sub-tropical, with mild winters (but subject to short cold spells) and hot, sunny summers. Summer, from June to September, is also muggy and with frequent thunderstorms. In the far south, where Miami is located, the climate is tropical, since the average temperature in January reaches 20 °C (68 °F).

Florida also is one of only 9 states that are a no state tax state, Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming — have no income taxes.

Now that the Dolphins have established a WINNING CULTURE in Miami free agents and non-free agents alike will want to flock to Miami. Look no further than the recent news that Pro Bowl QB Deshawn Watson listed Miami as the place he wanted to be traded to if he were to seek a trade.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that there is a growing sense Watson has played his last snap with the Texans. Chris Mortensen was told that Watson would like a trade to the Miami Dolphins. The lack of state income taxes combined with the culture Watson has observed for the Dolphins under coach Brian Flores apparently appeal to Watson.

The Dolphins Coaching at the Senior Bowl

The 2021 Senior Bowl will take place Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2:30 p.m. ET at the new Hancock Whitney Stadium on the campus of the University of South Alabama.

“The entire Miami Dolphins organization is excited to take part in this year’s Senior Bowl,” head coach Brian Flores said in a statement. “In this unique run-up to the draft, the Senior Bowl will be a great opportunity for our coaches and personnel department to interact with these players for a full week. We look forward to working with these prospects as part of this premier event with a tradition of featuring top-tier talent.”

The Dolphins will have an up-close look at some of the top talent in College Football as they will have their hands on quite a few draft prospects and in particular two Alabama players who joined the Reese’s Senior Bowl game to get to play for Miami’s coaches as they are former teammates of our Rookie QB Tua Tagovailoa and considered first round picks in upcoming NFL draft. Both have expressed a desire to play with Tua in Miami.

2020 Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith said this about Tua:

“We talked about it would be nice to run it back again,” Smith said with a smile Tuesday on NFL Network. “Not too much, but somewhat talked about it.”

Najee Harris Practices Against Agent’s Advice

According to the Palm Beach Post‘s Joe Schad, Harris chose to participate during Senior Bowl week against the advice of his agent because the running back “couldn’t be at the Senior Bowl and not compete.”

Running back Najee Harris measured just under 6’2” this morning and tipped the scales at an impressive looking 230 pounds. His arm length (33 3/8 inches) and hand measurement (10 inches) also stood out. The latter evidence, in part, explains why Harris is such a good receiver out of the backfield.

Najee Harris drawing the attention of two teams

While much of the talk on social media this morning centered around DeVonta Smith’s refusal to step on the scale, one of his Alabama teammates is drawing praise from scouts even before the first practice.

Sources say Harris is here for interviews and not expected to take part in practice this week. In the early going, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins have shown a lot of interest in Harris.

I have both players in my latest Mock Draft as Miami’s picks #3 to WR DeVonta Smith and #18 to RB Najee Harris.

Th fact that Miami is coaching at the Senior Bowl is HUGE and can’t be underscored because of more than the top picks that might seem obvious to many it’s about the later rounds, they can now get a close look at players that they can look to draft in rounds 3-7.

I am excited that Miami has this opportunity this year especially with all the draft capital they possess. This year’s NFL draft for Miami should be special!
