Starting To Warm Up To A Watson Trade?

Ok, when I first heard of the rumors I dismissed it as some ” WILD IDEA that Houston will trade Watson” but this thing will not die and it is looking more and more like Houston is bracing for the departure of Watson.

Adam Schefter@AdamSchefterThere is a growing sense from people in and around the Texans’ organization that Deshaun Watson has played his last snap for the team. It’s early in the off-season, there’s a lot of time left, but Watson’s feelings cannot and should not be underestimated. (Jan 17th 1:30 pm)

Keep in mind that Watson has a no-trade clause so he decides where he can be traded and he has already said he wants to play for Miami Deshaun Watson Has Played His “Last Snap for the Texans” and Wants to Go to Miami.

I am loyal to players we draft or trade for and that is why last year I was not on board with drafting Tua Tagovailoa because we had traded for Josh Rosen and I wanted to see him develop. After Miami did draft Tua and released Rosen (I did not like that move) I have backed Tua.

I still have no issues with Miami sticking with Tua and building around him as he develops. But I can’t any longer ignore the possibility that seems to be gaining traction that Deshaun Watson will be traded and that he controls where he goes, and he wants to go to Miami.

The Dolphins have the ammo to make a deal as they possess Houston’s 1st and 2nd round picks this year (From the Tunsil Trade) as well as our own with a total of 5 picks in the top 50 in the upcoming 2021 NFL draft and we have a young QB prospect that we drafted #5 last year and he has the potential to be special if he is properly developed.

Watson is a better fit for Miami because he is already a pro bowl QB having been voted to the pro bowl 3 consecutive years in a row…. Watson as our QB will catch us up with Buffalo as the Bills QB is already ahead of our young rookie QB. Miami’s Defense is already a playoff caliber Defense and having a QB who is also playoff ready would put the Dolphins on that NEXT LEVEL status.

Watson leads the NFL in yards per pass attempt (8.76), is second in passing yards (4,134), and also second in passer rating (110.6). Despite the Texans being 4-10, from Weeks 4-9, Watson became the fifth quarterback in league history and the first since Peyton Manning with the Denver Broncos in 2013 to record at least 275 passing yards and a 105.0 passer rating in five straight games.

Houston who most likely are looking to rebuild could get a young potential franchise QB in Tua and can build around him. The only question is compensation, what will it take to make a deal?

First off I would not give up BOTH of our first round picks and Tua that is just too much as we will also be taking on Watson’s huge contract extension he signed on Sept, 5th 2020 Deshaun Watson signed a 4 year, $156,000,000 contract with the Houston Texans, including a $27,000,000 signing bonus, $110,717,123 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $39,000,000. In 2021, Watson will earn a base salary of $10,540,000, while carrying a cap hit of $15,940,000 and a dead cap value of $67,140,000.

I think Miami if they are interested should offer Tua their (3rd or 18th) and (36th or 50th) any combo of those top 4 picks.

Miami’s 2021 Draft order

Round 1: #3 From Houston, Round 1: # 18 Miami’s Slotted order, Round 2: # 36 From Houston, Round 2: # 50 Miami’s Slotted order, Round 3 # 81, Round 4 # 121, Round 6: # 197 From Pittsburgh via Minkah Fitzpatrick trade, Round 6: # 202 From Seattle via 2020 draft trade-down, Round 7: # 254 From Atlanta via Charles Harris trade

The Dolphins also have the 7th best cap space in the league and depending on what they do Miami can spend big time on a free agent WR to marry to Watson as well as draft Najee Harris with the 18th pick of the draft.

If Houston don’t want Tua than Miami can trade Tua for picks that they can either keep or use in the deal to get Watson. So I am on board with the idea if it should happen.
