In just their second year of the rebuild the Miami Dolphins are having more success than most of us would have thought and for some had hoped. (I still would rather be drafting higher this year too) Miami currently sit at 8-5 and holding the last place in the AFC playoff race with the Ravens, Raiders & this week’s opponent the Patriots on the Bubble!
This is quite remarkable when you think of how last year season one just after the great purge of the 2019-2020 season when everybody attacked the Dolphins and accused them of tanking (Funny how “Tanking” is barely being mentioned this year about the Jets at 0-13) Only to see Brian Flores take this team that started out with some of the worst defeats in team history to ending the season beating the Patriots in New England in a game that truly mattered as the Patriots could have had a bye had they won.
The Dolphins in the first chance they had to use the resources they built up aggressively went into the 2020 free agent market and the draft and loading up with young talent that may have not reached their peak, and the end results are that just about every move they made panned out (Not at the RB position a subject I will harp on all this upcoming off season!)
How have the Dolphins managed to make such a huge turnaround in such short time and get a culture change and this team playing like a contender?
Simple answer COACHING!
Starting with head coach Brian Flores and both coordinators as well as the position coaches who have done an excellent job with the players on the team. Player Development is really the way you build a long sustainable team who will improve daily and that is what we see happening in Miami the Players and Coaches seem to march in lock step, they seem to genuinely care about their teammates and especially their coaches headed up by Brian Flores!
We can still see some holes that need to be filled/plugged but to be where they are at this point and time is truly amazing and no matter the outcome of these final weeks of the season no one can argue that Miami has had success and that their future is so bright!
The Dolphins have the predicted winners of the Division after New England seemed to take a step back (They still are a tough team) The Buffalo Bills looking over their shoulders and clinging on to a 2-game lead in the division with just 4 games to go. The reality is Buffalo will most likely win the AFC East, but they know next year this division will be tough to win as Miami, New England and even the hapless Jest who will most likely win the Trevor Lawrence Sweepstakes will be on their heels! The AFC East will soon be a top division in the NFL! I just do not see it being dominated by any one team in the near future.
Miami have had so much success with both their 2020 Draft Class and their 2020 Free Agent signings, and I want to acknowledge those players:
2020 Free Agent Successes:
- CB Byron Jones
- DE Shaq Lawson
- OG/OT Ereck Flowers
- ILB Kyle Van Noy
- DE Emmanuel Ogbah
- OLB Kamu Grugier-Hill
- LB/FB Elandon Roberts
- C Ted Karras
That’s 8 out of 11 2020 free agents that have come in and contributed mightily towards the 2020 success.
2020 Draft Successes:
- Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama (6′ 0″, 217 pounds)
- Austin Jackson OT, USC (6′ 5″, 322 pounds)
- Noah Igbinoghene CB Auburn (5′ 10″, 198 pounds)
- Robert Hunt T Louisiana-Lafayette (6′ 5″, 322 pounds)
- Raekwon Davis DT Alabama (6′ 6″, 311 pounds)
- Brandon Jones S Texas (5′ 11″, 198 pounds)
- Solomon Kindley G Georgia (6′ 3″, 337 pounds)
- Blake Ferguson LS LSU (6′ 3″, 229 pounds)
- Malcolm Perry WR Navy (5′ 9″, 186 pounds)
At some point throughout this season every one of these Rookies have contributed towards the teams 2020 success and a lot of that is because the veterans and the coaches have done an excellent job helping these rookies develop!
Add to this that in the offseason the Dolphins will have more than enough money to go after a big-name free agent or TRADE? As well as once again having 4 of the top 50 players in the upcoming 2021 NFL draft!
I just hope HC Brian Flores can have a more stable off season with his staff and not have the turnover he had last year. Only Time will tell but from the outside it seems he has a very solid staff of coaches that deserve commendation for how they have helped developed the players on this roster.
There is only one coach on his staff I would like to see move on and that is the area on this team that we have yet to see true player development and that’s the RB’s and I have called him out on at as early as last year! (Calling Out RB Coach Eric Studesville) It’s time for change!!!!!!
