“There are no Moral Victories” Miami DT Christian Wilkerson sya after Miami lose their 5th game of this season to the defending SB champions Kansas City Chiefs. That is a true statement but if there were “Moral Victories” Miami surely deserves consideration for Sunday’s loss.
The Dolphins have legitimate excuses as to why they lost that game and had those reason not been the case they would have most likely pulled that game out. They started the game without their defensive captain and week 13 defensive player of the week Linebacker Kyle Van Noy who had a three-sack performance against the Bengals last week. Also starting linebacker Elandon Roberts and defensive tackle Benito Jones was inactive for the game.
On offense they were without starting left guard Ereck Flowers, fullback Chandler Cox, and without their top three running backs as Myles Gaskin, Matt Breida (both dealing with COVID-19 issues ) and RB Salvon Ahmed was inactive as well.
That is a lot of players needed to win the game that were missing before we even started the game and to make matters worse we lost during the game our best starting WR DeVante Parker and TE Mike Gasiki both to in game injuries.
On To The game Review:
Early in the game Miami’s defense continued their streak of 19 games in a row where they have forced a turnover, the longest active streak in the NFL. It was by way of an interception but it was not Xavian Howard (At least yet) but it was by the much maligned solid cover corner but lacking in the INT count Byron Jones! That was his first of the year and only the 3rd in his 6-year career. (Hopefully, X is rubbing off) It also was the first of 3 for Patrick Mahomes who had only 2 INT’s the whole season prior to this game! Most of his INT’s came off tipped balls but it is a tribute to the way this scrappy defense plays!
The growing pains on offense continued as Rookie QB Tua Tagovailola started off slowly and the offense was not able to capitalize on the turnover but did get within 45 yards to kick the field goal, unfortunately our almost automatic kicker Jason Sanders missed that 45-yard attempt.
Miami’s defense on the Chiefs next possession made another exceptional stand as Jerome Baker (who had an exceptional game) was able to chase a retreating Patrick Mahomes (due to our defensive pressure) who ran backwards to avoid a sack but was run down 30 plus yards for the sack.
The offense got the ball back in good field position and this time Tua made the best of this drive and he marched the offense down the field and connected to one of his growing favorite targets, TE Mike Gesicki for a 7 yard TD pass to put the Dolphins up 7-0 near the end of the first quarter. Miami 7, KC 0.
Miami’s defense once again prevents the Chiefs from scoring on their drive as they got their 2nd INT at the very end of the 1st quarter when Eric Rowe picked off another tipped pass to stop a drive that had the Chiefs on Miami’s 36-yard line.
Tua oce again gets another shot to take the offense down and score a TD and much to his credit he did drive them down and threw a perfect pass in the back of the end zone to a jumping DeVante Parker who did not make the catch, so the Dolphins had to settle for the field goal and now is up by 10 points. Miami 10, KC 0.
In their next possession KC showed why they are so dangerous on offense as their key players started to make plays, TE Travis Kelcy who had a monster game started to make crucial catches to help derive their offense down the field and then the explosive Tyreek Hill showed why he is a lethal weapon when he ran 32 yard around the corner and down the sidelines for the TD (Miami’s poor tackling helped) and the Chiefs just like that is back in the game. Miami 10, KC 7.
After a couple of stalled drives between the two teams Miami’s Tua Tongaviola does something he has yet to do this season, he threw an INT! To be fair it was really on Jakeem Grant who tipped a perfect pass that he should have caught in the air and it was intercepted. Had he caught that pass he might would have scored a TD and at the very least been somewhere around the KC 23 yard line.
That gave the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes much time to take the ball down and score with a little under 3 minutes remaining in the first half, and that is exactly what they did as Patrick Mahomes hit TE Travis Kelcy in the end zone for the TD with 37 seconds left in the first half. KC takes the lead! KC 14, Miami 10. Half Time!
KC gets the ball to begin the 3rd quarter and Mahomes waste no time as he drives the Chiefs down and score another TD as he takes advantage of an injured Bobby McCain who went out and was replaced with S Clayton Fejedelem and connected with Tyreek Hill for his 2nd TD of the game and just like that the Chiefs are up by 11 points! KC 21, Miami 10. Early Third Quarter!
After another stalled drive by Miami’s offense they punt the ball to KC’s dangerous return man Mecole Hardman who proceeds to return the punt 68 yards untouched for the score putting the Chiefs up by 18 points! KC 28, Miami 10. And just like that KC scores 21 unanswered points in less than a quarter!
After a couple of stalled drives by both teams the Dolphins find themselves in bad field position backed up in their own endzone and Tua makes a rookie mistake and gets sacked in the endzone for a safety (A learning moment for our young star QB) Putting the Chiefs up by 20 and I said to myself the blowout is on! KC 30, Miami 10.
The Chiefs defense once again holds Miami’s offense and forces them to punt the ball and Mahomes quickly marches his team down field and it appears to be another scoring drive when Miami’s Pro Bowl Corner and legitimate Defensive player of the year get Mahomes 3rd interception of the game and his 9th INT of the season as Xavian Howard makes one of the best INT’s I have ever seen him make as he snatches one with a onehanded grab to prevent the TD and change the momentum of the game early in the 4th quarter.
Tua with this next possession gets hot and drives the offense down the field strictly passing and with just about 12 minutes in the game he throws a beautiful TD pass to TE Mike Gesicki and just like that the Dolphins are back in the game! KC 30, Miami 17.
Miami’s defense gets the stop on KC possession and we get the ball back with just under 11 minutes in the game, plenty of time! Tua (who took the 3rd quarter off) was hot in the 4th as he drove the offense down and on a QB sneak he gets in for the TD to get Miami within 6 points! KC 30, Miami 24.
Miami needed a stop on defense, but KC drove the ball down and basically put an end to any comeback as the kicked a field goal and the score then was KC 33, Miami 24 with 1:08 left on the clock. Tua was able to get Miami within field goal range and the Dolphins kicked the field goal with some time left on the clock with the idea of getting the onside kick but that failed and that was the game KC 33, Miami 24 final score!
The Dolphins are for real and it truly matters how they lose and to me they lost that game like winners and it all goes back to the culture Miami’s Head Coach Brian Flores has established. Miami started the game playing the scrappy way they do and as usual our Defense set the tone and did all they could early to win the game but it’s impossible to keep the number 1 offense in the league who is averaging 30 points a game out of the endzone all day. KC was to much for Miami when you consider they threw 3 INT’s had 3 sacks and still managed to win on the road in Miami!
The Dolphins are just in year two of their rebuild and there is so much to be happy for if you are a Dolphins fan!
Tua is looking better each week, he is growing and this team despite missing their top 3 RB’s two defensive starters, losing in the game Parker & Gesicki his top two receivers and the plays they left on the field was close to beating the Chiefs! The future is bright!
