Are The Dolphins Safe at Safety?

I will be the first to admit that I am not and never have been a coach and I also have not played on any level organized Football so keep that in mind when reading this article.

With that being said I can’t help but think that our Miami Dolphins are not in the best shape at a key position at either safety position Eric Rowe is our current Strong Safety and Bobby McCain is or Free Safety and at best they both are average.

Don’t get me wrong I like Bobby McCain and he is the QB of the defense and he dose a good job but I do not think his body size and weight is where Brian Flores will eventually want his starting FS to be and also the fact that both McCain and Eric Rowe re 27 years old an age that is not too old but for a team in year 2 of their rebuild the Dolphins will get even younger after the draft of 2021 as I see Safety as a position of need in the upcoming draft.

Requirements for the safety position can vary depending on which team you ask, but the general rule of thumb is taller than 6’0″ and heavier than 200 lbs. That can fluctuate, of course, but your dream safety who never leaves the field has to be big enough to stop the run and cover the field with range.

The Dolphins did draft a young Safety in the 2020 draft Brandon Jones who is playing well as a rookie rotational player, he possesses the height, weight and age that is what the Dolphins need and as he goes through the rest of the season and his off season development I can see the coaching staff adding more to his plate in 2021 along with one of their top 4 picks in 2021 being a young Safety like Jevon Holland 6′-1″ 201 LBS from the Oregon Ducks who opted out of football this past season.

CBS sports says about Holland:

The safety has been in a number of first-round mock drafts over the past few months with the safety electing to opt-out in October after the Pac-12 announced its return to play. Had Holland played, he would have entered the season as one of college football’s interception leaders as a true junior after playing in all 27 games of his Oregon career, starting every game for the Ducks in the 2019 season.

So even though Bobby McCain has done a solid job converting to Safety as well as Eric Rowe I expect the Dolphins to get younger and draft a TRUE SAFETY to go along with rookie safety Brandon Jones and get younger in 2021.
