Is Miami’s Franchise QB In The Future?

5 Things that separate Trevor Lawrence from other CFB Playoff QBs

I’m just about sure most of my readers must think I hate QB’s because I do not value them as many do. No, I do not hate QB’s but I do feel most if not all of them are overvalued coming out of college. I have history on my side as proof.

Where the Dolphins are at this particular time in their rebuild, instead of taking a short-cut to the rebuild and risk giving up first on Josh Rosen and second on the potential players they would pass up by drafting a QB and or giving up picks and trading up for one, it’s just not worth the risk.

In 2021 if we ever get back to normal life the next batch of QB’s will be on the clock and just like in 2020 Miami have stockpiled two first round picks and two 2nd rounders as well. That is their current status even before the 2020 draft where it is not beyond conceivable that they might trade for more picks to stockpile for the 2021 NFL draft.

Everybody seems only focused on the 2020 draft as if this is the only draft that a team can get a franchise QB. Even if Miami would find themselves picking later in the 2021 draft than 5th if they have the resources and with far fewer holes to plug than that would be the time to mortgage the future for one of the QB’s in the 2021 draft or even find one in free agency.

So let’s take a look at the projected 2021 QB prospects and see the options that should be available.

2021 QB Prospects

  • Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson
  • Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
  • Kyle Trask, QB, Florida
  • Brock Purdy, QB, Iowa State
  • Mac Jones, QB, Alabama
  • Tanner Morgan, Minnesota
  • Shane Buechele, QB, SMU
  • Sam Ehlinger, QB, Texas
  • K.J. Costello, QB, (TBD) NCAA Transfer portal
  • Kellen Mond,  QB, TEXAS A&M

Who among these future QB prospects will have a season like Joe Burrow? Who will turn out to be the next Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson or Lamar Jackson? Is there the next Tom Brady among these names?

Don’t be fooled but the great PR that agents for players like Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa have retained and plays the media and fans like an instrument. Every year in the draft there is the next great franchise QB that so far in history has proven to be wasted draft picks.

So don’t by into all the hype that is coming fast and heavy just before the NFL draft because next year they will rinse, wash and repeat the cycle.

2021 NFL Free Agent QB’s

  1. Patrick Mahomes (team has 5th year option)
  2. Deshaun Watson (team has 5th year option)
  3. Dak Prescott (Cowboys have problems locking him up)
  4. Cam Newton (Current Free Agent) Please sign him Now Miami!
  5. Andy Dalton (Need To Retire)
  6. Philip Rivers (Need To Retire)
  7. Mitchell Trubisky (So Far a disappointment in Chicago)
  8. Jacoby Brissett (Did not take advantage of his opportunity in Indy)
  9. Ryan Fitzpatrick (Need To Retire)
  10. Taysom Hill (Is he even a QB?)

As you can see there are plenty of opportunities to get a franchise QB it just takes one of these players to want out like a Deshaun Watson who is frustrated with the team trading away his go-to WR.

So don’t get caught up in thinking that 2020 is a must get QB year!
