Miami Dolphins Roster Makeup After Free Agency

feature-02

After a surprisingly aggressive free agency the Dolphins have added 10 new players to the roster and they provide quality depth to the roster so how does Miami’s roster look with these additions.

QB’s

The Dolphins have 3 QB’s listed on their roster and many are expecting Miami to use a top draft pick in the 2020 draft to select a QB, I am not in agreement as I feel the QB room is perfectly set for 2020 as we have a veteran QB vs a Young 23 year old QB who was selected 10th overall in 2018 and he just needs time to develop and having him back to once again try and beat out Ryan Fitzpatrick is all the Dolphins need. I have avoided drafting a QB in my Final Mock Draft  due to my strong belief that Miami  is already set for 2020 at the QB position.

WR’s

The Dolphins currently have 12 WR’s on the roster and this is by far the most talented unit on the team, in fact the Dolphins really don’t need to address the WR position in the upcoming draft even tough I did take on in my Final Mock Draft in the 7th round. Keep an eye on one of our veteran WR’s Albert Wilson as his contract is not in line with his production and he might be asked to take a pay cut or be cut. That could make the Dolphins look to address the position higher in the draft but for now the WR room is loaded.

RB/FB’s

The Dolphins have 5 RB’s and 1 FB on the roster and this was a very disappointing unit last year as 37 year old QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was the  leading rusher for the Dolphins. Even though he was a disappointment last season maybe year two for  Kalen Ballage will show significant improvement also Myles Gaskin will be entering his 2nd year in Miami. The Dolphins added much needed help through free agency when they signed RB Jordan Howard and many suspect they will use one of their early draft picks in the upcoming draft to add even more competition to the RB room. I did select on in my Final Mock Draft. The Dolphins in free agency added some competition for FB Chandler Cox who had a decent rookie season with LB/FB Elandon Roberts

*The RB’s get a lot of blame but as well all know they Offensive Lines poor play contributed to the poor production last year and the Dolphins are addressing that unit too.

TE

Miami list 4 TE’s on their roster, two of them are going into their 3rd year as they were part of the 2018 draft where Miami doubled up on the TE position,  TE is Mike Gesicki who had somewhat of a break out season last year is more of a Flex TE where he is more of a receiving TE, many are looking forward to his further development, the other TE  Durham Smythe  is considered to be a single-back TE who is more suited for blocking,  they both posses different skill sets for the needs of the team. In my Final Mock Draft I did select a TE who I have often targeted in my mock draft simulators as with so many picks if the Dolphins keep them we could use more competition in the TE room.

OT

The Dolphins list just 2 OT’s on their roster and one G/T this is a unit that needs serious upgrade and should be addressed early and more than once in the upcoming Draft in fact I have drafted two in my Final Mock Draft and both are within the first two rounds.

OG

The Dolphins have 4 Guards listed on the roster and 1 G/T and 1 C/G  so they have a good mix of players to go into camp and compete last years rookie Michael Deiter had a solid rookie season but nothing spectacular, it takes time to develop on the next level and hopefully Deiter will respond in his second season. The Dolphins also added Ereck Flowers through free agency to add legitimate competition among the Guards. I did select one in my Final Mock Draft as we need all the help we can get and competition as well.

Centers

At the Center position the Dolphins have 2 players currently on the roster that come training camp will most likely compete for the Starting job. I think they will add more via the draft and can see at least one if not more C/G drafted in the upcoming draft. I drafted one in my Final Mock Draft  as the Dolphins need to get this position fixed. They did sign free agent Ted Karras  to come in and compete for the starting job. (Mild to High priority).

CB/DB/S

The Dolphins currently have 16 players on the roster that are listed as either CB, DB or S the players listed as DB usually can play both positions CB or Safety. Miami has a lot of money tied up with the CB position with the free agent signing of Byron Jones making him the highest paid CB on the team and in the NFL and they also locked up Xavien Howard this past year making him the highest paid CB in the league at the time.

Needless to say they are not in the market for a CB in the draft at least not early but the one position in the defensive backfield that could use a draft pick or two is the Safety position where in my Final Mock Draft I select two.

LB’s

The Dolphins have more Linebackers on their current roster than any other position with 14 and it reflects the value of the position and the competition will be fierce as  Brian Flores added some veteran help through free agency with ILB Kyle Van Noy, Kamu Grugier-Hill

DE/EDGE

The Dolphins currently have 5 Defensive Ends listed on their roster all of whom are young and not considered TOP NOTCH players at their position but they do provide solid players that will be needed in the rotation. The free agent pick up of Shaq Lawson and Emmanuel Ogbah  should provide  some improvement  to this unit but It will require more scheming to get the most out of the DE’s and hopefully the Dolphins can address this position early in the draft as they could use a special player that can create consistent pressure as well as rack up sacks. As of now it does not appear the Dolphins have that on their roster. But hey have improved with the FA additions.

DT’s

The Dolphins currently have 5 Defensive Tackles on the roster all young and will be lead by last years rookie first round pick Christian Wilkins who had a solid rookie season. More will be expected from Wilkins in 2020 and he seems to be the one to step up and deliver. I also in my Final Mock Draft get him help as I selected two DT’s to compete in the rotation as these big men can ware out fast and the more we can add young talented players to step in and play the better our defense will be.
