The one thing that has eluded the Miami Dolphins for the past 20 years is an identity, what kind of team would they be. A lot of the problems were a result of a revolving door mentality when it came to coaches.
Either by being fired or by quitting the Dolphins have run through eight coaches in the past 20 years. (not counting interim coaches)
As recently as the last head coach Adam Gase the Dolphins were never able to establish an identity. This team seemed lost in the wilderness.
The two best coaches that most likely would have established a true identity and a winning culture did not stay around long enough to do that. Jimmy Johnson and Nick Saban who both were good hires but both also quit on the Dolphins. The other 6 coaches we’re just bad hires.
It’s way too early to tell what we have in Brian Flores but there are some encouraging signs that they may have gotten this one right and hopefully he’ll stick around to prove that to be the case.
I can’t think of a time when I was more excited about a five win season then this past 2019 season. I will admit I am one of the ones who was frustrated that the Dolphins actually won five games, I would have preferred they been one of the top two teams picking in the 2020 NFL draft.
It would have been nice to see the Dolphins coaching staff on the sidelines at the Senior Bowl but that was before we all were blindsided by the firing of OC Chad O’Shea.
Despite my displeasure that the Dolphins won five games, the reality is it did more good than even I imagined.
Establishing an identity is way more important than getting the top pick in the NFL draft, having a competent coaching staff trumps having the number one or two pick in the draft.
Don’t get me wrong I’m still disappointed that we won’t be in a position to get who I wanted it Chase Young in this upcoming draft but It’s a fair trade-off to have established a winning culture and an identity as Brian Flores did.
The benefits of establishing an identity and showcasing his coaching talent will be an attractive feature for any free agent that may have had doubts of coming to Miami.
Winning the last game of the season against the New England Patriots did so much more for this team moving forward, to end the season winning up in New England can’t help but boost the confidence of the returning players in that locker room.
The Dolphins identity is that they are a whale coached, smart, hard-working team. A scrappy group of guys that overachieved and we can’t help but salivate with the idea of adding talent to this team coupled with this coaching staff that the Dolphins just might turn out to be a contender sooner rather than later.
So the most anticipated off-season is here and I can’t wait to see the moves that are made to improve this roster and go into the 20/20 season off of a tremendous momentum building 2019 season.
